Dodging Diabetes Dodgeball Tournament raises awareness and funds

Funds raised at a dodgeball tournament will be used for nursing supplies for diabetic students in the Jefferson City Public School District.

November marked National Diabetes Awareness Month and one Jefferson City family had made it their mission to help local kids with diabetes.

William Berendzen was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes in 2016. His mom said many kids struggle with management and maintenance of the disease, "The initial onset of diagnosis is extremely overwhelming. Life becomes one big math problem because you're measuring ratios of insulin to intake of carbohydrates and getting on a really set schedule," Amy Berendzen said.

The family organized the 2nd annual "Dodging T1D (Type 1 Diabetes) in JC" dodgeball tournament Sunday. Funds raised were set to be used for nursing supplies for diabetic students in the Jefferson City Public School District. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 9.4 percent of people in the United States are living with diabetes.
