Young hunters across the show-me state are preparing for the 2018 youth deer hunt.

Hunters ages 6 to 15 can hit the deer stands at dusk Saturday morning.

Each year, thousands of young hunters fill the woods for two days of youth hunting only. In 2017, the Missouri Department of Conservation said the young hunters harvested 17,222 deer during the early youth portion of the deer hunting season.

The top counties for the early youth portion were Osage with 380, Howell with 377, and Franklin with 354 deer checked.

In 2017, the total number of deer for the early youth portion was 11,171.

Archery deer hunting continues through Nov. 10 and again from Nov. 22 through Jan. 15.

The late youth portion of deer season runs Nov. 24-26.
