Winter Weather Advisory issued ahead of freezing rain Thursday

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory Thursday.

A Winter Weather Advisory was issued by the National Weather Service for all of mid-Missouri Thursday.

Temperatures were expected to plummet throughout Thursday afternoon as a strong cold front pushes through the area.

Ahead of this front, spring-like temperatures and rain were expected to continue throughout the morning. By the later afternoon, temperatures dip into the 20s, leading to a concern of flash freezing of wet roads, sidewalks, and elevated surfaces.

As temperatures drop, rain will transition to freezing rain , sleet, and eventually snow throughout the later evening hours. Untreated roads and sidewalks could become slick with a light glaze of ice possible.

Once the front passes, the freezing rain will linger on/off for many locations for 2-3 hours before the brief switch over to sleet/snow. No sleet or snow accumulations were expected.

Public officials encouraged to use caution for the evening drive home by limiting speed and being aware of changing road conditions.

Many mid-Missouri schools announced early dismissals for Thursday afternoon. Check out our closings page to see if you are impacted.
