One officer dead, one injured after shootout with suspect

UPDATE: Law enforcement took Kenneth Simpson in custody.

According to a tweet from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Simpson came out of the house.

He was arrested by the patrol's SWAT team.

The patrol said the area was still an active scene, and they asked people to avoid the area.

With the arrest, the Highway Patrol canceled the Blue Alert issued on Sunday night.

UPDATE: The Missouri State Highway Patrol says one of the two officers shot in Hermann Sunday night has died.

Sergeant Mason Griffith died from his injuries. The Highway Patrol says the second officer is in serious but stable condition.

According to the city of Hermann, Officer Adam Sullentrup, 31, was the other officer who was shot.

The city said it is hopeful for his recovery.



A standoff continues outside a house on Market Street. Police believe the suspect, Kenneth Lee Simpson, is still inside. As many as 15 vehicles from the Hermann Police Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol were observed outside the house.

A KRCG 13 reporter says media members at the scene were moved from the area around 8:00 AM. They were told the area was no longer safe for them.

Gasconade County R-1 Schools announced classes would not be in session on Monday.

Governor Mike Parson has tweeted his condolences for the officer's family as well as the Hermann Police Department.

ORIGINAL STORY

The Missouri State Highway Patrol issued a Blue Alert just before 10 p.m. Sunday after two officers were shot in Hermann with a suspect on the loose.

MSHP said the officers were with the Hermann Police Department.

In a tweet, MSHP said Kenneth Lee Simpson was the suspect. The tweet went on to say two officers were shot at a Casey's in the 800 block of Market Street.

A Blue Alert is put out when a law enforcement officer is killed or seriously injured in the line of duty.

According to online court records, Simpson has numerous prior charges and arrests, including assault and weapons charges.
