The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a police officer died and two other officers were injured after responding to a Clinton residence Tuesday night.

The agency identified 30-year-old officer Christopher Ryan Morton as the victim.

Sgt. Bill Lowe said Clinton Police officers responded to a call Tuesday evening at 9:20, where two women could be heard screaming in the background.

Lowe said that officers said a suspect shot at them from inside the residence when they arrived. Officers entered the home in an attempt to apprehend the suspect, identified as James E. Waters, who then fatally shot one officer and wounded two other officers.

First responders transported the two officers to a hospital for treatment. One sustained moderate injuries, the other sustained minor injuries.

Lowe said a SWAT team entered the residence and found Waters, 37, dead at 12:10 a.m.

No further details were released.

Tuesday's shooting happened seven months to the day when Clinton officer Gary Michael was killed back in early August 2017. Lowe paralleled that tragedy with Tuesday's incident.

"It was just another tragic event for this community and especially this police department," Lowe said. "They've endured a lot, they're going to endure more."
