A 31-year-old man was seriously injured after crashing his motorcycle following a high speed chase.

Maries County Sheriff Chris Heitman stated one of his deputies tried to conduct a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 63 inside the Vienna city limits Tuesday. Heitman stated a motorcycle had been driving 71 mph through a 45 mph zone. Just after the motorcycle stopped at the Ballpark Road intersection, it sped up and drove south.

A release stated the motorcycle reached speeds greater than 135 mph inside the city limits of Vienna. The deputy lost sight of the motorcycle and reduced his speed for safety reasons, according to Heitman. After driving a few miles south, deputies saw the motorcycle crashed on the side of the road. Deputies provided medical assistance to the driver, Mark Matthews, and contacted emergency personnel. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital via helicopter.

Matthews, of Potosi, had multiple warrants out for his arrest. Heitman said Matthews would face additional charges of resisting arrest and driving while suspended, out of Maries County.

Heitman stated the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Vienna Fire Department and Maries Osage Ambulance assisted in the incident.
