WASHINGTON — Reaction among Missouri's congressional delegation fell along party lines Friday following President Donald Trump's declaration of a national emergency at the southern border.
Republican Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler released a statement saying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's intransigence left President Trump with no choice but to declare an emergency.
"His emergency powers give him the authority to redirect funding to protect the American people, and I believe there are non-defense areas of the government where it is appropriate to do so," she said.
Fellow Republican Jason Smith, who represents southeast Missouri, tweeted his support for the president's decision.
Missouri's two congressional Democrats both denounced the decision. Lacy Clay called the declaration a fake emergency.
Emanuel Cleaver said Trump was unable to resist creating chaos where none is needed.
"Any attempt by this President to circumvent this body to pay for a campaign promise—that he said Mexico would pay for—would be a gross overstep of the constitutional powers provided to the Executive Branch and would open the door for future abuse of power," he said in a statement released Thursday night, ahead of the president's announcement.
