Friday morning, horses and instructors at the Glendale Stables were getting ready for their first annual Time to Ride.

Time to Ride is a chance for kids to learn and ride horses for free in a safe, controlled environment.

Hosted at Trowbridge Livestock Center at the University of Missouri, instructors said Saturday's event is a rare opportunity for the public.

Usually, the public can't walk into Glendale Stables to ride the horses for free, but anyone registered for the event on Saturday can ride horses or ponies with no added charge.

Time to Ride is from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m.

Brooke Boyer, an instructor at Glendale Stables, said riding horses provides multiple benefits for children.

"It gives them a sense of responsibility," Boyer said. "They are given a chance to take care of an animal, and that gives them full responsibility.

Boyer said rain or shine the weekend event will go on.
