A motorhome caught fire on Wednesday afternoon shutting down parts of Interstate 70 eastbound in Columbia.

The fire initially shut down both eastbound lanes near the 129-mile marker between the 63 Connector and Lake of the Woods as firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.

By 4:46 p.m., Columbia firefighters said the motorhome fire had been extinguished and one lane of I-70 remained closed.

The fire department as well as the Missouri Department of Transportation, Missouri State Highway Patrol and Boone County Joint Communications all urged drivers to choose an alternate route or expect delays.

BCJC said the fire created a traffic hazard and urged drivers to avoid the area.
