Public works officials on Friday said drivers in the Capital City can expect more road closures downtown before the season ends.

The 100 block of High Street was partially closed as of Friday afternoon. City officials said the entire block will close on Monday.

Officials said the closure is the latest step in a summer-long construction project on High Street.

Design engineer Tia Griffin said wooden trolley tracks from the city’s first trolley have rotted, causing the pavement to buckle. She said construction crews are tearing up the pavement, removing the tracks and laying down new pavement. While they are at it, she said workers are redoing sidewalks and revising crosswalks to make them more visible and ADA-compliant.

Griffin said the 100 block of High Street should reopen by mid-September. After that, she said workers will close the 200 block of Madison Street for about a month. She said the parking garage will remain open during that time.

Griffin said workers hope to finish the work by the time October‘s concert comes around.
