The Jefferson City Fire Department said a family and its pet cat were safe after a house fire Wednesday evening.

Crews said upon arriving at 8:02 p.m. to a reported structure in the 1900 block of Swifts Highway, they found smoke and flames showing from the lower level of a single family residence.

Officials said three teen residents and one child were home at the time of the fire and escaped without injury. Fire crews rescued one pet, a cat, from the residence.

Authorities said fire damage was contained to the room of origin with smoke and heat damage present throughout the residence. Investigators had not determined the cause of the fire as of Thursday morning; but said they believed an electrical issue could have been responsible for the fire.
