Father son racing duo take to lake

Andrei, Billy, and their team pose for a photo celebrating a great race Saturday.

Lake Race 2017 is coming to an end, but Saturday boats big and small finally got the chance to race it out on the lake.

Billy Allen and his son Andrei Allen have been racing together since last year on their team Allen Lawn Care and Landscaping. The two live in Pleasant Hill, Iowa, but have a home at the lake they frequent often.

The boats at lake race go fast, nearly 75 miles an hour for the division the Allens compete in, but Andrei said when he is on the water, he is not focused on how fast they are going.

"Main thing is the adrenaline gets kind of pumping pretty good," he said. "You don't really notice the speed, you're just kind of figuring out what you're supposed to do, what your next move is."

Andrei drives the boat while Billy throttles. Andrei said their ability to talk on the water is their key to success.

"We are very good at communicating with each other to make sure we know where everybody's at in regards to the race course, and then also making sure we have a plan if something goes wrong," he said.

On the lake, something could always go wrong, but Andrei said it is a chance he is willing to take.

"To know that stuff can happen, you just kind of have to overcome it, and you just have to do everything you can to make sure that stuff like that doesn't happen, but it's definitely a risk that you have to take," he said.

The 19-year-old was the youngest driver at the races. He said winning is worth the risk.

"I love the competitiveness," he said. "I love racing. I like to be out there competing with people."

The team placed first in their division Saturday.

Earlier this year they won third place at a competition in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Andrei was born in Kondopoga, Russia and came to the U.S. when he was ten years old. He recently graduated from SouthEast Polk High School, and plans to attend Iowa State University in the fall to study Horticulture and Landscape Design.
