Fatal Phelps shooting victim identified, shooter reports self-defense

The shooting victim in a fatal Phelps County incident has been identified as a 39-year-old Rolla man.

According to a release from the Phelps County Sheriff's Department, William Lee Dale died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Deputies had responded to a location in the 10000 block of County Road 2080 Tuesday at 1:15 a.m. in reference to a shooting incident. The reporting party told deputies Dale had unlawfully entered the residence and assaulted a male subject.

The party indicated they feared for their life and used lethal force.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Phelps County Sheriff's Department continued to investigate the incident.
