Suspicious backpack rendered safe at Midway Travel Plaza
BOONE COUNTY —
A bomb squad determined a suspicious backpack did not contain an explosive device Monday morning in Boone County.
The Boone County Sheriff's Department led an investigation at the Midway Travel Plaza after a suspicious backpack was found. A man had told Boone County Joint Communications he had made an explosive device inside a backpack "and he would be waiting for deputies."
When law enforcement arrived on scene, the man refused to walk away from the backpack. Deputies fired a "less than lethal shotgun to fire one beanbag round" at the man and detained him, after which he was taken to a hospital.
The bomb squad then determined the backpack was safe.
A release stated the investigation was ongoing.
