Eldon woman has no plans of slowing down at age 96

Growing older doesn't always mean slowing down. Ninety-six-year-old Monica McMillen is a prime example of that (Elizabeth Hoffman/KRCG 13).

Growing older doesn't always mean slowing down. Ninety-six-year-old Monica McMillen is a prime example of that.

"I just can't keep my feet still when there's music going on," she said with a laugh.

While making pies for her church fundraiser, the Eldon woman couldn't help but take a break to dance.

While her love for classic country music is obvious, Monica said not everyone shares her appreciation, "Young people now they can't stand Gene Autry, and I can't stand rock music."

Monica is a cancer survivor and she still lives on her own and, as if that's not impressive enough, the list goes on.

"I volunteer down at the senior center Monday morning, and I volunteer at the senior center on Tuesday," she said.

Monica also makes time for an occasional night of pitch.

"Well, sometimes I win, but not very often, but it's all in the game, we have a good time," Monica said.

And while she doesn't always follow her doctor's advice.

"She just got right in there and danced her little shoes off," Eldon First Church of the Nazarene Secretary Debbie Chapman said, "I thought man there's no way I could do something like that!"

"I call her Unique-a," pastor Jerry Frye said. He is not only Monica's pastor, but he said he is also proud of the example she sets to the congregation.

"We live in a society today that's narcissistic and all about me and what's in it for me, but Monica spends herself, her energy investing others throughout the community," he added.

Monica doesn't just dance. At the Eldon Turkey Festival in September, she couldn't help but notice the Shetland Ponies.

"And I said oh, I'd like to ride one." And she did just that!

As for the future, Monica has no plans of slowing down. "I could sit at home and look at the four walls, but I want to avoid that."

Instead, she'll continue to live life her to the fullest.

Pastor Jerry Frye shared the video of Monica dancing on his Facebook page, and so far it's had more than 5,000 views.
