Eldon football player breaks bone in neck during practice

An Eldon High School football player is recovering from surgery after breaking a bone in his neck at a practice Wednesday.

According to school officials, the student, Hunter Bushnell, took a hard hit at practice. Afterward, he was conscious and breathing, and coaches followed procedure and called for emergency assistance, and he was taken to the hospital.

He was diagnosed with a broken vertebra in his neck and taken to surgery immediately. Officials said after surgery, the boy was doing well.

The school released the following information on Twitter:

"In an effort to help the family with immediate needs and medical costs, we will be taking up a collection at tonight's home volleyball game, as well as at tomorrow night's Homecoming football game. A t-shirt fundraiser is also being planned. More detailes will be released soon. #MustangStrong #TogetherWeRise"
