BOONE COUNTY — An overnight fire caused major damage to a home just south of Hallsville Friday night.
Boone County Fire Protection District crews were called to 11954 Burg Road just at 9:54 p.m.
The owners told firefighters they smelled smoke inside their home and when they went outside to investigate they found their garage fully engulfed in flames.
The fire spread through the entire attic of the structure before being controlled.
Additional tanker vehicles were called to the rural home to help battle the blaze.
District Assistant Chief Gale Blomenkamp said a lot of the owners' items were recovered by firefighters, but the family dog did not make it out alive.
Authorities said the blaze started in the garage, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
There was an estimated $200,000 worth of damage to the home.
