A Columbia man was charged with burglary and theft of a motor vehicle among other charges.
According to court documents, at 2:55 am on Thursday, Boone County deputies responded to a call at a residence where a woman said a man was trying to break in through her front door.
Deputies said the woman told them the man walked away before they got there, but they said Boone County Joint Communications told them a 911 call came from a woman two houses down who said the man was in her garage.
They said when they arrived the woman’s husband had Ted Benoit, 26, at gunpoint on the floor of the garage.
Benoit had a loaded handgun in his waistband, deputies said, with the safety off and a round in the chamber.
The resident said he awoke to the sound of the car starting in the garage and confronted Benoit at gunpoint as he was trying to open the garage door.
The man said Benoit was able to enter through the backdoor which had been left unlocked.
Deputies said while searching Benoit they found a set of Subaru keys belonging to another person in the neighborhood, and a wallet and iPad belonging to the woman who called initially.
They said Benoit was dressed in all black, wore black leather gloves, and a black facemask, in addition to having a flashlight and screwdriver on him.
Prosecutors charged him with first-degree burglary, attempted first-degree burglary, stealing a motor vehicle, stealing, armed criminal action, and possession of burglary tools.
He was taken to the Boone County Jail and held on a $50,000 bond.
