As college students return to the downtown area, the Columbia Police Department was increasing their presence on the downtown streets.

With the return of college students and recent reports of shots fired in the downtown area, college students walking around downtown Sunday said it was nice to see so many extra officers around.

"Even this weekend there were more officers and we were wondering why there were so many cops out," Peyton Perkins said. "It was weird, but also nice and gives you a good feeling knowing they are keeping an eye on things and present."

Officers said the increase in officers downtown is to create a safer atmosphere for the community. They said the extra law enforcement is not directly related to the recent reports of shots fired in the downtown area.

Police said the safety of the community is their number one priority, and they plan to have extra officers patrolling the area multiple times a year.
