The City of Columbia Sewer Utility began its $2.7 million sewer line project on Monday.

The project is contracted with Ace Pipe Cleaning and it will rehabilitate approximately 55,000 linear feet of sewer line, 275 manholes and 300 lateral connections. It will be paid from Sanitary Sewer Utility bond funds approved on the 2013 ballot. An interested parties meeting was held Dec. 28, 2017 and the public hearing took place Feb. 5, 2018.

Columbia Utilities Patricia Weisenfelder said the goal is to keep storm water out of the sewer main. The construction will seal cracks that have occurred over time and the lining will provide a fabric that will expand, to do a better job of keeping the storm water out of the sewer system.

"The project is basically a progressing project, so each day it will be a different location," Weisenfelder said.

Crews began to run cameras through the sewer mains on Monday to get more detailed information on what work needs to be done for each sewer line.

During the lining process, residents in the area may be without water for a short period of time and will receive a door hanger with additional instructions on what needs to be done during the period.

"It will affect a small number of residents each day," Weisenfelder said.

People in the area may also notice work trucks and steam rising from the construction areas. The material uses steam to expand and secure the liner in place.

Last year, several smoke tests were done across Columbia to see what sewer lines needed improvement and the sewer lines being fixed were identified as part of the fiscal year 2018 Inflow and Infiltration Rehabilitation Project.

Starting Monday, crews will work from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. The project is anticipated to be complete by August 2019, weather permitting.
