'Canned Film Festival' movies at the Capitol benefit Samaritan Center

Moviegoers were treated to a showing of "Shrek" on the Capitol lawn Friday night.

Cool and clear conditions Friday evening made for a perfect screening of "Shrek" on the Capitol lawn.

Moviegoers brough lawn chairs, blankets, and snacks for the showing on an inflatable movie screen.

Admission to the movie was free, but event organizers are calling the series "The Canned Film Festival."

"We have been fortunate enough to be asked to participate in movie night and collect the benefits from people bringing in canned food goods for the Samaritan Center to come see the free movie," said Samaritan Center Project Manager Denise Kuensting.

The next movie at the Capitol, "Raiders of the Lost Ark," is scheduled for August 2nd.

Columbia also hosted "Movies in the Park" at Flat Branch Park Friday night.

Rise of the Guardians was shown on an inflatable screen. Admission for the next two showings is $2 per person, and children 8 years old or younger are free.

Escape from Planet Earth will be shown August 9, and Brave on September 13.
