Mayor Greg Rehagen has resigned, effective immediately.

His resignation was announced Wednesday night at a city council meeting.

The council publicly accepted his resignation. Alderwoman Martha Siegel will serve as interim mayor, and the council said it would appoint someone to take her position.

Rehagen told community members he resigned for health reasons, citing a recent surgery he had and another one he's expected to undergo with extensive rehabilitation.

The resignation comes after the city has been embroiled in controversy over the dissolution of its police department and city spending.

A concerned citizen group was formed in response and petitioned for a state audit, which Rehagen publicly discouraged.

Rehagen told community members Wednesday night once his recovery is over, he hopes to get involved with the city again.
