A news release from the Boone County Sheriff's Department said detainee Robert Erik Bishop died due to a medical emergency Saturday around 3 p.m.

The release said Bishop collapsed to the floor of his holding cell at the Boone County Jail. Jail personnel, the nursing staff and members of the Columbia Police Department responded to Bishop. He was taken by ambulance to the University of Missouri Hospital where he was then pronounced dead.

At the time of his booking, Bishop refused to provide next-of-kin information. He was 52-years-old and is believed to be homeless because his address was listed as the streets of Columbia.

Bishop was arrested by the Columbia Police Department on Friday for first-degree trespassing and a municipal warrant for stealing.

The Boone County Medical Examiner's Office performed an autopsy on Monday. Their office is awaiting the toxicology report before determining Bishop's official cause of death. The case is currently under investigation by the Boone County Sheriff's Department Investigators, but no foul play is suspected.
