Investigators said a 19-year-old's death initially thought to be the result of a homicide may have been self-inflicted.

Audrain County Sheriff Matt Oller reported Antonio Jefferson's death investigation remained open, due to the lack of solid evidence in supporting wounds from self-infliction.

A 911 call reported a car on fire and a man down on County Road 913 on December 12, 2017. When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they found a passenger car had crashed into a tree, and saw Jefferson lying in the roadway with injuries not consistent with a car crash, a release from the sheriff's office stated.

A knife, later determined to be an exact match of the description of the knife Jefferson purchased 30 minutes prior, was lying near him in the roadway, Oller stated in a release. An autopsy revealed Jefferson died from blood loss due to wounds that were consistent with a sharp instrument. The knife was analyzed and found to only have Jefferson's DNA on it.
