MU wrestling sends three to finals
ST. LOUIS -- For the first time in program history, Mizzou wrestling will send multiple grapplers to national championship matches.
J'Den Cox (197 lbs), Joey Lavallee (157 lbs) and Lavion Mayes (149 lbs) all won semifinal matches Friday night in St. Louis.
Cox improved to 27-0 on the season with a 6-2 win over Jared Haught of Virginia Tech. Cox will try to become the first wrestler in MU history to win three national titles.
Lavallee used a late takedown and near fall to beat Dylan Palacio of Cornell 8-5. Lavallee will take a 29-1 record into his championship match.
Mayes advanced with a 4-2 win over Northern Iowa's Max Thomsen. Mayes also used a late takedown to earn the win.
Five Tigers will finish the weekend with All-American honors. Jaydin Eierman (141 lbs) and Daniel Lewis (165 lbs) are still alive in the consolation bracket. Both will finish no worse than 6th place.
Missouri ended the day in fourth place in the team standings with 81.5 points. The Tigers trail Penn State (121), Ohio State (89.5) and Oklahoma State (86).
