Local 3-time state champ talks about her passion for speed skating
JEFFERSON CITY —
The 22nd annual Capital City Speed Skating Championship will be Saturday at the Washington Park Ice Arena.
It's a chance for speed skaters from across the mid-west to compete and for some to work toward their Olympic dreams.
Eleven-year-old Mylee Hawkins of Fulton appeared on KRCG 13 Live at Sunrise ahead of her race.
"My favorite part about speed skating is that you never know how a race will turn out," Hawkins said. "You can end up winning, losing or falling and I love winning."
She's a three-time state champ for the fastest times in her age group. Hawkins said her goal is to be able to do five laps in under a minute and her fastest time for a lap is 13 seconds.
"I do have hopes to go to the Olympics but I'm taking it one step at a time cause I don't know what's going to happen in the future," Hawkins said. "I'm really hoping I get to go to the Olympics though."
It's free to get in to see the race, which will start at 9 a.m.
