'National Safe Digging' month promotes safety in April

Spring is in full swing and for many it's the start of outdoor home improvement projects. But before you break ground, there are some safety reminders to avoid costly damages.

April has been tabbed as National Safe Digging month, and Missouri One Call System (MOCS) urges residents to call 811 before reaching for that shovel.

According to the Common Ground Alliance, every six minutes an underground utility line is damaged.

David Leffert with MOCS appeared on KRCG 13 Live at Sunrise to talk about why it's important to follow their recommended five steps before digging.

MOCS said no matter how small or large the job, anyone planning to dig should follow these steps:

  1. Call before you dig
  2. Wait the required time
  3. Respect the Marks
  4. Confirm Utility Response
  5. Dig with Care

Leffert said excavators are legally responsible for damages.
