State Treasurer Clint Zweifel spoke to more than 300 students at Columbiaâ??s Russell Boulevard Elementary School about the importance of saving money for college.
He promoted his Missouri MOST program that gives families a tax-deferred way to save for most colleges and universities.
Students got the chance to ask the Treasurer some questions about their college plans.
Zweifel said, â??It was a chance to interact with some special kids. These kids are asking great questions. Theyâ??re talking about the dreams that they have and the small investments that they can make now to make a difference in their lives later on.â??
Missourians have invested more than $2 billion in more than 129,000 Missouri MOST accounts.
Those numbers are an all time high.
Zweifel said, â??Whether itâ??s a 4-year university, community college or trade or technical school, we know that higher education in some form is going to be an important part the work force and an important opportunity for those young people. They have access to an easy way to save for college with MOST. Itâ??s now a model for other states in terms of the quality of the savings program.â??
Zweifel is holding a contest on his website where he is giving away a Missouri MOST account worth $5,290.
The winner will be notified next month.
