Sat, 20 Sep 2014 21:08:26 GMT —
More than 300 volunteers cleaned up trash along the Missouri River near Boonville.
For the first time in 9 years, the Missouri River Relief organization included Boonville in their Annual Big Muddy Clean Sweep program.
Volunteers walked along the banks of the river and picked up several tons of garbage and debris.
They say littering at camping and picnic sites is the biggest problem.
Event organizer Jeff Barrow said, â??The main thing that we find our plastic bottles. They float really well. There a millions of them produced every year. We also find tires, refrigerators, freezers and everything but the kitchen sink.â??
Missouri River Relief has hosted 116 Missouri River clean-ups.
Nearly 20,000 volunteers have cleaned more than 700 tons of trash in 8 states.
Clean-ups are scheduled for Jefferson City and Hermann next month.
