More than 1,200 people gathered at the Boone County Fairgrounds for the largest safety event of its kind in the country.
The Missouri Ground Alliance sponsored the Third Annual Damage Prevention and Excavation Safety Summit.
The 2-day event was free for utility workers, contractors and excavators.
Workers from 10 states learned how to prevent and reduce unnecessary damages to buried utilities and other infrastructure.
Summit Chairman Derek Leffert said, â??They are able to come to a single location and learn those practices and principles that they wouldnâ??t otherwise get. Hopefully, they will be able to apply that stuff when they go home and work at home.â??
Event organizers also held some live auctions and raffles to benefit the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri.
Food bank officials got a check this afternoon worth more than $2,000.
