Columbia utility customers paying their bills online with credit credits had to pay a little extra beginning today.
A new $4.60 convenience fee went in effect for every credit card payment up to $1,000.
That means a customer paying a bill of more than $1,000 would pay the fee twice.
Any bill of more than $2,000 would be charged a triple fee and so on.
Assistant Finance Director Lynn Cannon said the online payment fee helps lighten the cityâ??s burden of paying high credit card fees for their utility customers.
City council members approved the change last year after they found out the city had paid out $462,629 for utility customer credit card fees in 2011.
Columbia utility customers donâ??t have to pay the convenience fee if they pay their bill with cash, a check or by automatic bank withdrawals.
