Holts Summit gets updated fire station

The Holts Summit Fire Protection District has a new, updated fire station

Since January, house fires have claimed the lives of five children in Holts Summit.

The new station's bigger and gives the volunteer department more room and updated equipment to better fight fires. It also means faster response times.

The Holts Summit Fire Protection District hosted an open-house Saturday afternoon for the community to come in and take a look at the new firehouse and see the fire trucks up close. A fire safety trailer was also set up to educate families on fire safety.

Renovations on the building took nine months to complete.

"Well it's actually been pretty difficult," said Chief Scott Brooks. "With no offices to work out of, essentially no storage space, everything we had was condensed into just the four existing bays of the old fire station...It was a very difficult time for us actually."

Brooks says the firefighters are "excited" about the new building. The fire district recently bought a used fire truck from Long Island, New York. It's the only heavy rescue vehicle in the county.
