The Special Olympics Missouri Summer Games are underway in Columbia this weekend.
Athletes are competing in 6 summer sports including bowling.
Members of the Eldon bowling team are just some of the more than 2,500 athletes competing in this yearâ??s games.
Even if they donâ??t win gold medals, they still consider themselves champions because of the support of family and friends.
Jon Engelmeyer is the only bowler on the team without wheelchair.
When Jon started competing 7 years ago, he was still walking with crutches.
Today, he can bowl and play basketball all by himself.
Jonâ??s mother Emma Engelmeyer said, â??When he was born 19 years ago, they told me that he would never come out of the hospital. Itâ??s just to see the fact that he is able to participate and function in society in a fairly normal manner.â??
The games kicked off Friday night after a lively opening ceremony that included a band performance and an appearance by Governor Nixon.
The event ends Sunday at 4 p.m.
