Columbia fire investigators said a boy playing with a lighter was the cause of Wednesday nightâ??s duplex fire on Quail Drive.
The child set a mattress on fire.
Firefighters responded at 8:37 p.m. and saw flames coming from the windows of the building.
It took firefighters about 15 minutes to get the fire under control.
No one was hurt.
Neighbors said they had trouble getting through to 911 operators.
Columbia fire officials said their response time was less than 3 minutes because there were multiple callers.
Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief John Metz said, â??There are a limited number of call takers. While that call is being processed, other people are trying to get through.â??
Investigators said the total amount of damage was about $55,000 because of fire, smoke, and water damage.
