Columbia Public Schools will be closed on Friday for a fifth day in row because of weather and hazardous road conditions.
State education officials said this winterâ??s storms could cause some school districts to extend classes into the summer.
Columbia Public Schools administrators have gone over their 6 scheduled snow days by cancelling classes on Friday. The last day of school for Columbia, if they have no more weather cancellations, will now be Thursday, June 5. If they get anymore snow days, the last day of school would be Friday, June 6.
Columbia Public Schools spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark said, â??It does put us into a sticky situation because we have summer school sessions starting on June 9. We would have to have some discussions with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education about whether we might be able to move those dates.â??Columbia school administrators said safety is their main concern when deciding whether to use a snow day. That includes concerns for school buses that travel more than 200 routes and sometimes have a hard time starting in subzero temperatures.
