Child playing with matches may have sparked fire

The Jefferson City Fire Department is on the scene of a house fire.

It was called in at 5:26 p.m. Tuesday at 1001 West High Street, which is right at Brooks Street.

Fire crews told KRCG the official cause of the fire is still under investigation, but a juvenile playing with matches could be to blame.

They said that three families total were displaced by the fire, and the American Red Cross is helping them find temporary housing.

A woman at the house went to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Right now it's not clear if or how she is related to the young boy.

Most of the damage is in the upstairs loft area.
