Senator Roy Blunt wants to honor the Monuments Men.
Thatâ??s the group of men and women who are the subject of a new George Clooney movie.
The movie is the story of how 350 men and women from 13 countries helped preserve and protect millions of pieces of artwork during World War II.
Blunt talked about a bill that would give the Monuments Men the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor during a visit to the State Historical Society of Missouri on the Mizzou campus.
The societyâ??s museum has a collection of Thomas Hart Benton paintings that share some of the same values of the Monuments Men artwork.
Art Collection Curator Dr. Joan Stack said, â??The Monuments Men were doing some of the same things that Thomas Hart Benton was doing. They were trying to preserve the aspects of the history of World War II while it was happening. Thatâ??s what we are doing at the State Historical Society of Missouri. We preserve that heritage.â??
Senator Blunt hopes a Congressional Medal of Honor for the Monuments Men encourages more Americans to learn about the rich history of these works of art.
