The school year is winding down and area needy children need some help with their weekend meals.
A special program for schools in Mid-Missouri called The Buddy Pack Program provides free backpacks filled with food to qualifying students.
Students get their backpacks on Fridays and return them to their schools on Mondays.
More than 20 Mid-Missouri schools take part in the program including all 12 Jefferson City elementary schools.
Organizers have a hard time providing food to needy children when The Buddy Pack Program stops during the summer.
Food Bank Director Peggy Kirkpatrick said, â??Children are the most vulnerable and the hardest to reach especially during the summer. If people want to help us, we will continue to put more and more food into the local pantries during the summer.â??
You can check with your local school or the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri to learn how you can help feed needy children during the summer months.
