Wed, 15 May 2013 09:00:00 GMT — Low-income families and individuals are getting a break from the heat in Boone County.The Columbia Water and Light Department and the Voluntary Action Center started this year??s window air conditioner exchange program.Customers of Columbia Water and Light and Boone Electric can trade their older, less efficient units for a brand new one.Individuals must have a gross monthly income of less than $1,915 to qualify for the exchange.Heart patient Jeff Wheeland of Columbia appreciates his new window unit.Wheeland said, ??I??ve had my air conditioner for about 8 years. It just won??t blow any cold air anymore. I??ve waited and waited. I just couldn??t wait any longer. I had to come and get one that was new. I??m very grateful for them having this program.??The Voluntary Action Center is also collecting and giving away fans for the 25th annual Summer Fan Program.Last year, the organization gave out a record 445 fans.For more information, call 573-874-2273.
