Authorities said a worker involved in a construction project on an eastern Missouri bridge died in a job-related accident.
The St. Louis Post Dispatch reported the man was on a barge downstream from the Blanchette Bridge over the Missouri River when a 55-gallon drum fell on him around 10:30 a.m. Monday.
The bridge carries Interstate 70 over the Missouri River between St. Charles and St. Louis counties. The Missouri Department of Transportation is spending $64 million to rebuild the westbound side of the bridge.
The worker's name was not immediately released, but the project's contractor, Walsh Construction Co., said he was one of its employees.
Walsh Construction officials said the barge was located roughly midway between the Blanchette Bridge and the Discovery Bridge, a short distance to the north.
