A woman charged with voluntary manslaughter and child abuse pleaded guilty Monday in Camdenton.
Roshell Johnson was charged a few days after 20-month-old Ocean McCoy died at University Hospital in Columbia the day after sustaining serious brain injuries from shaking and non-accidental head trauma on Jan. 29, 2008, while under Johnsonâ??s care at a Brumley-area home. The residence was shared by Johnson and Oceanâ??s father.
The guilty pleas were part of a plea agreement, â??in which the defendantâ??s pleas were accepted to amended charges of voluntary manslaughter in knowingly causing the death of the child and abuse of a child by inflicting cruel and inhuman punishment upon a child resulting in serious injury leading to death,â?? according to Miller County Prosecuting Attorney Matt Howard.
Johnson, now 37 years old, faces anywhere from ten to 25 years in prison.
A pre-sentence investigation and sentencing assessment report to be prepared by the Missouri Division Probation and Parole was ordered after the guilty plea. Final sentencing was scheduled for July 9 at the Camden County Courthouse.
Johnson will stay in the Camden County jail pending her sentencing, where she has been in custody since the case was transferred from Miller County in 2009.
