A woman was taken by ambulance to University Hospital as a trauma-alert patient after her SUV and a dump truck crashed Thursday morning.
Thu, 04 Apr 2013 20:11:52 GMT — An 81-year-old woman died after her SUV and a dump truck crashed Thursday morning.Columbia Fire responded at 9:46 a.m. to the intersection of Oakland Gravel Road and Starke Avenue, and found Betty Kemper of Columbia trapped inside her 1998 GMC SUV. Firefighters used hydraulic tools to cut the vehicle away from its trapped driver, while other crew members provided emergency medical care.Kemper was taken by ambulance to University Hospital as a trauma-alert patient, which indicated she sustained life-threatening injuries. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.The driver of the 2011 Kenworth dump truck was not injured and declined medical attention at the scene.Kemper was driving southbound on Oakland Gravel Road, when the dump truck entered her SUV's path while trying to turn left onto Oakland Gravel Road from Starke Avenue.Extricating Kemper, who was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the collision, took about 15 minutes. Crews were on the scene for a total of about 45 minutes.
