An elephant at a southwest Missouri zoo that was suffering from kidney disease has been euthanized after becoming too week to stand.
The Springfield News-Leader reports the female elephant at Dickerson Park Zoo was estimated to be 50 years old and had lost about 800 pounds.
The elephant, named Pinky, came to the Springfield zoo in November 1981 from the Zoological Gardens in Abilene, Texas. Her first pregnancy, in 1985, resulted in a stillborn calf, while her second calf that was born in 1991 died two years later.
Her third calf was born in February 1995 and lives at Oklahoma City Zoo.
The zoo says the median life expectancy for an elephant cow is 46.9 years. Zoo officials announced her death Saturday.
