Water, power out for hundreds in southwest Columbia

A water main break and scattered power outages were reported in Columbia Friday afternoon.

Hundreds of Columbia water and light customers were without services Friday afternoon as a water main break and electrical outages affected customers in the Thornbrook Neighborhood and along Scott and Vawter School Roads.

According to the city's outage map, more than 900 people were affected.

Columbia city officials would not reveal where the problems were, but workers on the scene said the water and power outages were unrelated and "coincidental." Calls for information were answered by an out-of-town answering service.

A Tweet from the city indicated that the water main break occurred in a 12-inch main near the corner of Scott and Vawter School Road. The power outage was caused by a tree falling on the Perche Creek Substation.
