Volunteers gather to raise money, awareness for homeless veterans
Volunteers in Columbia are raising money and awareness to help homeless veterans.
Dozens of people gave donations at the eighth annual VA 2K walk and roll event at the Truman VA hospital.
The fundraiser includes a short walk of 1.2 miles, therapeutic guitar lessons, tai chi instructions and a hula hoop display.
Volunteers collected household cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items, paper towels and toilet paper for homeless veterans.
The theme for this year's event is the 1950s.
"It showcases not only our passion and dedication to our veterans but also our staff here at the VA," said Andrea Higgins, a health and wellness coach.
VA 2K volunteers across the country have collected more than $2 million worth of supplies for homeless veterans during the past eight years.
