Virgin Mary, baby Jesus statue destroyed at Helias Catholic High School

A statue of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus at Helias Catholic High School was destroyed overnight.

Cole County Crimestoppers is offering a $400 reward for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible for vandalism at Helias Catholic High School.

A statue of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus at the school was destroyed late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.

School officials found the figure toppled and broken when they arrived Wednesday morning. The head came off in two pieces, and a large crack formed near the base. It appeared to be beyond repair.

"I've tried to do some research on line," Helias principal Sr. Jean Dietrich said. "I think it'll be at least a thousand dollars or more to replace it. I don't know what we're gonna do there, but we certainly would like if anybody can help us to figure out who did this, that would be most appreciated."

The statue was acquired for the school from the Christian Brothers in Glencoe, Mo., by the late Leon Vanderfeltz. It was the centerpiece of a memorial to Vanderfeltz and his wife, Rita Mae.
