Two arrests for fatal shooting on Conley Road

The Columbia Police Department arrested 26-year-old Samuel Butler and 22-year-old Joycelynn Brown.

Two arrests have been made in connection with the homicide investigation of 25-year-old Anthony M. Unger, of Jefferson City.

Unger was found fatally shot Sunday night in a car in a parking lot at the northwest corner of Conley Road and Brickton Road in Columbia.

The Columbia Police Department arrested 26-year-old Samuel Butler and 22-year-old Joycelynn Brown.According to court documents, Brown told investigators that Unger asked her for a ride to the location for a drug deal. She said she saw him fill a large ziplock bag with marijuana and place it under the hood of the car before leaving for Columbia.

Brown said Unger told her he was selling half a pound of marijuana for $1,400.

She said Unger had set up the drug deal with Samuel Butler, who she only knew as "DC" at the time.

Brown told investigators she and Unger first met up with Butler and two other black males at the Hyvee at 25 Conley Road. Butler got into the vehicle with Brown and Unger and told them to follow the black car he had arrived in.

The three followed the black car to the parking lot of 21 Conley Road.

Brown said the black car pulled along side the car containing her, Unger and Butler. Butler then got out of the car with Unger and Brown and entered the black car, while an unknown black male got into the car with Unger and Brown.

The unknown black male allegedly asked Unger if he had the marijuana and told Unger he had money for the drugs.

Brown said Unger then got out of the car, got the marijuana from under the hood and returned to the car.

Brown said the unknown male then got out of the car, went back to the black car briefly and then got back in the car with Unger and Brown.

Brown said the unknown male then displayed a handgun and demanded Unger give him the marijuana. Brown said she ran away from the car when she saw the gun and heard the threat, and heard several gunshots as she was running.

When she saw the black car drive off, Brown said she returned to the car and found Unger bleeding and unresponsive.

Both Butler and Brown have been charged with 2nd degee murder. Butler is being held on a $1 million cash only bond. Brown has a bond of $500,000, cash only.

The investigation is still ongoing and police say more arrests are likely.
