Thieves taking advantage of some boat owners

"A lot of the thefts that we've have been from boats that are parked on lifts and in the up position and then the lower unit is missing from the lift," Corporal Stacey Mosher said.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said several lower units have recently been stolen from boats at the Lake of the Ozarks.

The thieves appear to be fishing from small boats along docks.

"A lot of the thefts that we've have been from boats that are parked on lifts and in the up position and then the lower unit is missing from the lift," Corporal Stacey Mosher from the Missouri State Highway Patrol said. "So we believe they're coming by water," Corporal Stacey Mosher from the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

The highway patrol said there are steps boat owners can take to protect their vessel.

"The main thing that we ask is that you put some type of owner-applied number on the lower unit,"Mosher added. "What makes the theft very difficult to investigate is the lack of any manufacturer serial number on the lower unit on outboards. These are high-end lower unit outboards that are being stolen, so take the time to use an etching tool or a stamp and put some type of owner-applied number on that lower unit, that way we can at leat get it entered or have a way to track it if we recover them."
