Authorities have charged a 19-year-old in a stabbing death at a bonfire in suburban Kansas City.
Ryan Tyler Cox of Kansas City was charged Thursday with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death last Saturday of 19-year-old Chason A. Pennington of Lee's Summit.
Court records said that Cox told police the stabbing was self-defense and he did not mean to hurt Pennington.
Witnesses told police that some teens at the campfire were drinking and smoking K2, a synthetic marijuana, before the stabbing.
The death comes as Missouri legislators are debating a bill banning K2.
Some experts believe K2 is potentially much more dangerous than pot.
K2 is a mixture of natural herbs treated with chemicals and sold legally as potpourri in smoke shops and convenience stores.
