The Holts Summit man charged with killing his grandmother and shooting at law enforcement officers will make his first court appearance on Friday.
Ryan Koebel, 17, is scheduled to make an initial appearance in a Callaway County courtroom at 9 a.m. Heâ??s charged with fist degree murder, four counts of armed criminal action, and three counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer.
The investigation began Friday with a stabbing in Holts Summit. Highway patrol troopers were in the area for that investigation when they heard about a man walking along Highway 54 carrying a gun. As troopers and Holts Summit police officers attempted to make contact with him, they say Koebel pointed at gun at them and started firing. Thatâ??s when the highway patrol trooper hit Koebel with his cruiser.
According to court documents, the teenager told officers he got into a fight with his grandmother, Karen Cates, and during the argument shot and stabbed her several times. She died at her home in Holts Summit.
